Gallstones are a problem that many people may face in their life, but not all times will you need to have these gallstones removed. But if you are having problems due to gallstones there are a few ways that they may be treated.
First to help yourself and perhaps help the symptoms of gallstones you need to make sure you eat right. A balanced diet that is low fat is the right way to help to reduce the symptoms. Also look into controlling your weight to help with gallstones.
There are a few ways that gallstones can be taken care of without surgery too. One is dissolution, where medicine will help to get rid of the gallstone. However, that method will take a while for the gallstone to go away and not easily used on all people. The other non-surgical method is shock wave lithotripsy. Much like the method that is used on kidney stones, where a sound wave will be sent into your body to break up the gallstones so they will be more easily dissolved by medicines.
There are also three types of surgery’s that can be done to remove gallstones, one is the laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Used in most cases to remove the gallbladder it where a very small hole will be cut and laparoscopic instruments are used to take out the gallbladder. A very short 90 minutes later the surgery will be completed.
Next is the open cholecystectomy, where a larger whole will be cut into your stomach. And obviously will take a longer time to recover from, plus probably a stay in the hospital. The third method is endoscopic retrograde cholantio-pancreatography where both the gallstones and gallbladder are removed. A camera will be used to go down your esophagus and into your bile duct. As the gallstones are spotted another instrument will be used to remove them.
Finally, though the best of all methods is the medicine to dissolve the gallstones, these are all the options that your doctor will have. Remember to practice preventative medicine and not get gallstones in the first place.
